One of the important lessons you will be learning during your Reiki training are the Reiki hand positions. These are important for both Reiki self healing and healing for others. Your Reiki training will teach you 12 hand placements that are typically used for Reiki treatments.
However, the following hand placements are not written in stone. They serve as a guideline to use during Reiki training and when using Reiki yourself. Once familiar with the positions, you can adjust your hands as needed for any given situation.
When doing a full body Reiki session using all 12 of the Reiki hand positions, its advised to spend 5 minutes on each position for a full hour session. When giving Reiki to others, they will normally be laying down and you will work from the top of the head down. Head positions are generally worked from an above/behind position for others.
Reiki Hand Positions
Position 1 – Face
For yourself – The palms of your hands are placed against the face, hands cupped lightly over the eyes with the fingers upon the forehead. Remember, you don’t need to put pressure on the face, just touch it lightly.
For others – place your hands over their face, palms resting gently on the forehead, while cupping the hands lightly over their eyes.
Position 2 – Top of Head and Crown
For yourself – Hands are placed on both sides of the head with the heels of the hands resting near the ears and the fingertips touching at the crown of the head.
For others – Wrap your hands around their head, with inner wrists touching and fingertips touching the ears.
Position 3 – Back of Head
For yourself – Hands are placed with one at the back of the head and one resting at the nape of the neck.
For others – Gently tuck the hands under their head, with the hands forming a cradle for them to rest their head in. Let the backs of the hands rest on a pillow or table.
Position 4 – Jawline and Chin
For yourself – The chin rests in the palms of cupped hands, allowing the hands to be wrapped along the jawline.
For others – Surround the jawline with your hands and allow your fingertips to touch under their chine, while resting the heels of your hands gently over or close to the ears.
Position 5 – Heart, Neck and Collarbone
For yourself – One hand gently grasps the neck, with the neck resting comfortably within the V that is formed by your forefinger and thumb, with the other hand resting between the heart center and collarbone.
For others – Very lightly wrap the right hand upon their neck. If they are not comfortable with this hand placement, you can alternatively let your hand hover above the area. Place the left hand over the heart center.
Position 6 – Rib Cage and Ribs
For yourself – Hands are placed on the upper rib cage just below the breast.
For others – Place the hands on the upper rib cage just below the breasts. One hand should be in front of the other going across.
Position 7 – Abdomen
For yourself – Hands are placed on the solar plexus area just above the navel with fingertips touching.
For others – As above, hands are placed on their solar plexus area just above the navel. One hand should be in front of the other going across.
Position 8 – Pelvic Bones
For yourself – Each hand is placed over each of the pelvic bones with fingertips touching,
For others – Each hand is placed over each of the pelvic bones. One hand should be in front of the other going across.
Position 9 – Shoulder Blades
For yourself – Hands are placed on the shoulder blades. If you are doing a session for yourself and cannot reach that far behind you, you can alternatively place the hands on the top of each shoulder.
For others – Have them lay on their stomach for the last positions. Hands are placed on the shoulder blades, the area where many emotional burdens are stored. This is an area where you may need to treat for a bit longer than others to help shift those energies.
Position 10 – Mid-back
For yourself – Hands are placed at the center of the back.
For others – Hands are placed at the middle of the back. One hand should be in front of the other going across.
Position 11 – Lower Back
For yourself – Hands are placed on the lower back.
For others – You can just shift your hands down the back and place them over the lower back area. One hand should be in front of the other going across.
Position 12 – Sacrum
For yourself – Hands are placed on the sacral region of the body, at the top of the buttocks.
For others – Same as above.
Some practitioners will end a session by combing the aura of the recipient with their hands in order to clear any energetic debris that the physical body has released during the treatment.
A silent request should be made to transform any negative and stagnant energies into positive energies that will return to the Universe.
