The Warrior Planet – How Does Mars Affect Us?
On September 11th Mars will be moving into a new star sign, so I thought I would take a moment this morning to talk about the warrior planet and how it affects us.
Mars is the 4th planet from the Sun and orbits the Sun in 687 days. That means it spends just under 2 months in each star sign. Mars has been referred to as the “Red Planet” because of it’s reddish hue. Mars is the ruling planet of Aries. Mars’ energy is aggressive and assertive by nature. It is the symbol of the Greek God Ares, the God of War. It can be confrontational at times and rules things like strife, weapons, and combat. Mars is a very masculine energy to work with that is known for being sharp, quick, and penetrating. It is in its nature to attack. It has also been thought to be the planet that can wreck marriages.
Mars is said to rule over sharp objects as well as the people who work with them. It is ruler of the head, muscles, and blood. Ailments such as burns, migraines, head injuries, rashes, and fevers are all ruled by Mars’ energy. It represents the color red, passion, and anger. Mars rules over our defenses, our aggression, and that which makes us want to fight back when we feel we are under attack. It represents our survival instincts and animal instincts. This energy can also make use feel brave and have no fear with it’s more impulsive aspects.
But this doesn’t mean that Mars is all about war and aggression. Sure its energies could be destructive at times. They can also be helpful in situations where we need that bit of assertive energy to push through a difficult or stubborn issue. Other qualities that are associated with Mars energy are confidence, sexuality, ambition, strength, impulsiveness, and energy. It really does play an important role in our horoscopes and natal charts too. Mars rules over the 1st House in the natural zodiac (I’ll be explaining more about that in the next post).
The positive influences of Mars center around giving us strength when we need it, self-confidence, and independence. The Sun is also known for its ability to push us, and give us energy, but it differs from Mars. The Sun’s influence is a creative energy whereas Mars is just raw energy waiting to be shaped. It’s that kick out of bed in the morning, that drive that can lead us towards adventure and getting things sorted out. It lights a fire under our passions and then propels us forward toward our intended goal.
Where Mars falls in a Natal chart will determine our sexual nature, our temper and how we express it, what can make us angry, and what drives that initial instinct to act. Whichever house Mars falls in, in your chart, will show where in your life you apply this energy, where you show the most enthusiasm. And when Mars connects with other planets in our chart, it lends its energy, colors it with self-assertion and action, showing the kind of experiences in life we seek out. Mars is our drive for achievement in our life.
Knowing where Mars affects you can give you the tools needed to work with that energy in a more positive way. It can also help you to keep balanced when the more negative sides of Mars is trying to rear its head.
